Training content
Supporting individuals living with a stoma requires staff to understand both the clinical aspects of stoma care and the importance of maintaining dignity and skin integrity.
This course provides community care staff with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely support individuals with a stoma in home, supported living, and residential care environments.
The training combines theory and practical demonstration, helping staff build the confidence required to deliver safe, person-centred care.
Course Structure
The training provides an introduction to key aspects of stoma care, including:
• Basic digestive system anatomy
• Reasons stomas are created
• Types of stoma (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy)
• Stoma appliances and equipment
• Routine stoma care procedures
• Infection prevention and skin protection
• Recognising complications
• Escalation and documentation
Duration: 3-4 hours including practical training and competency assessment
